Trichology Vs. Dermatology | What are the Differences Between a Trichologist and Dermatologist

Trichology vs Dermatology

When suffering from hair loss, it can be difficult to know exactly where to turn. There are many different specialties in the field of hair and hair loss, and it is important to work out which you feel is most relevant to your specific problem. Dermatologists and Trichologists are often visited, when a patient has a hair or scalp issue. However, while seeking out either of these two professionals, you might want to know the proper differences in the two fields.

What is Trichology?

Trichology is the para-medical (non physician) study of hair health and scalp conditions as it relates to science. Trichology may include the study of diseases, assessments of the causes, and the proper treatment method.

Trichology stems from the Greek word ‘trichos’ meaning hair and ‘ology’ meaning study of. A trichologist is a specialist who treats concerns relating to the hair and scalp. A trichologist is described as a ‘paramedical professional’, to help doctors manage patients with hair problems. An experienced trichologist will take a holistic approach that encompasses lifestyle factors, diet and general health when devising a treatment program. They will be highly experienced and well-versed in hair loss and hair-related problems, but will be unable to write a prescription or provide medical treatment.

What is a Trichologist?

A trichologist is a para-medical professional that specializes in treating hair loss and scalp conditions in a holistic manner. Holistic is a term that describes the treatment of the whole person, or taking into consideration a person’s mental and medical background. Based on the health history, a trichologist is certified to give nutritional advice, recommend lifestyle changes, and suggest proper restoration treatment methods to improve the health of the hair and scalp.

What is Dermatology?

Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin, nails, hair and its diseases. It is a specialty with both medical and surgical aspects. A dermatologist is specialist doctor that manages diseases, in the widest sense, and some cosmetic problems of the skin, hair and nails.

What is a Dermatologist?

A dermatologist is a qualified medical doctor who specializes in the field of dermatology, the skin. The success, or otherwise, of your hair loss treatment depends largely on the effectiveness of your diagnosis. Male and female pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss, but there are many different forms of alopecia and it is important that a properly qualified and experienced medical practitioner, such as a dermatologist, correctly identifies the underlying cause. A dermatologist can then provide medical treatment, scalp injections, and write prescriptions.

What is the Difference Between a Trichologist and a Dermatologist?

A dermatologist is a medical professional who specializes in the health of skin. A trichologist focuses on skin conditions as well as hair, yet takes a holistic approach rather than medical approach in regards to treatment and offering nutritional advice.

Trichologists, in a sense, are seen as the first line of defense when dealing with hair and scalp issues. In many cases trichologists and dermatologists compliment one another when assessing severe hair and skin cases, and may work very well alongside one another.

So, What Will Happen During My Consultation?

During all consultations, our clients will have a personal meeting with Nina. Nina will ask clients to complete a brief questionnaire in order to become familiar with health history.

At Nina Ross Hair and Skin Therapy, we focus on factors such as medical history, eating habits, nutrition intake, a possible hormonal imbalance, stress levels, and sometimes results from a blood test done by a physician.

This information is essential to properly determine which treatment and nutritional method will be best for each client.
